Alyssa Noel topped off her high school running career with a seventh place finish at the Texas 5A State Track and Field Championships in Austin on Friday.
The weather was warm and windy as the Lady Lion arrived at Mike Meyers Stadium to compete against eight other runners from around the state.
Noel and the other athletes warmed up in the Texas Longhorns Darryl K. Royal Stadium and were then ushered to the track. The nine young ladies were introduced to the capacity crowd of 20,000. The start official called the nine to their starting positions, rose the pistol and with a crack of the gun, they were off to the roar of the crowd around the first turn.
At the break-line Noel fell into the last position as the exuberance of the meet set a very fast pace. Around the far corner and into the second straight away, the led pack recognized the pace was too quick and all nine bunched up going into the 400 meter mark in 1:06-1:07. Noel was boxed in at the back with runners in front on the side and behind, but the pack was tight, it was anyone’s race.
Into the final 200 meters the eventual winner took over and stretched out the pack, Noel tried to respond but had difficulty breaking out and around the box. With 150 meters left, Noel had broken free and was charging forward with three other runners.
Noel finished 7th in 2:19.52, 8 tenths of a second off the school record time set two week before.
Noel finishes her high school career with three trips to the state cross-country championships, one trip to the state track and field championships. School record in the 5000 meters, 1600 meters and 800 meter runs.
